Railroad magnate Samuel Sloan built this splendid 3-story mansion in 1864 with views of the Hudson River and historic West Point. Lisburne Grange on the crest of a hill, is sited on 16+ acres and comprises the main house with over 30 rooms, a large carriage house and terraced gardens. Architect James G. Rodgers was retained in 1913 by Mr. Sloan’s son, Samuel, to remodel the house as it stands today. His wife, Katharine Colt Sloan retained noted landscape architect Fletcher Steele to design the famous gardens. The main house has impressive ceiling heights and ample windows throughout. The main entrance hall has wrought iron doors, a fountain and floating staircase. The ballroom with chestnut floors and fireplaces at each end has French doors opening to a balustraded terrace on three sides. The grand dining room has a coffered ceiling and French doors leading to its own private terrace. A second hallway with slate floors and an original mural and whimsical wrought iron filigree birdcage leads to a wood paneled library with hidden study featuring an early French mantel carved in 1741. There are 9 en suite bedrooms with fireplaces, each room different from the other. An allee of linden trees leads to a 3-story carriage house with two large apartments and several garages. The expansive meadow to the north of the main house has a variety of specimen trees, some planted by the original owner. The upper terrace displays ancient Tunisian columns, statuary and a carved balustrade, leading down to more terraces with a reflecting pool and wrought iron tea house. The swimming pool, created by Fletcher Steele, is embedded in the hillside and was inspired by the dragon fountain at the Villa d’Este near Rome. Lisburne Grange was the elegant setting for Sloan’s active political and social life. He was the founder of the Hudson River railroad and served as state senator before providing personal support to Abraham Lincoln. He joined efforts with other prominent families of his time to found the Brooklyn Academy of Music and the Long Island Hospital. Lisburne Grange was the home of the Sloan family for over 80 years and only one other family has lived there since, fully respecting the architectural integrity and original details of the property.
